Come and discover the Cave of the Güixas in the Aragón Valley with an extraordinary caving route!

The cave is located in the village of Villanúa, only 21 km from Jaca (Huesca: 87 km, Pamplona: 125 km), and at the foot of the Collarada mountain that forms part of a limestone karst system. Access to the cavity is simple and can be done on foot through a section of the Camino de Santiago, since it is located a few meters from the village.

The cave was formed by dissolution during the last glaciations of the Quaternary between 25,000 and 30,000 years ago. It is in the phreatic level of the Collarada peak (2,886 m), so the water coming from the Pyrenees, especially during the melting season, causes a constant erosive action on the cavities of the cave, being able to create an underground river in the most intense times of the year. Normally, the river is dry, but depending on its activity, visits to the cave can be restricted.

The continuous action of the water has configured a spectacular underground scene full of calcareous formations such as stalactites, stalagmites, columns or rimstone. The cave has 2 geological formations inside: the room of the Cathedral of 16 m of height and a chimney that allows the access of the solar light that makes possible the proliferation of vegetation in its interior. The cave houses troglobite animals adapted to cave conditions such as bats.

According to archaeological investigations, the cave was inhabited from the Neolithic period (3,000 B.C.) until the 4th century A.D. The name of the cave "las güixas" or house of the witches refers to the covens that witches celebrated in the chimney inside from the fifteenth to the nineteenth century.

The activity will be directed by a guide who will advise and explain how to make the sections of the path and the curiosities of the cave. The activity doesn't present difficulties for its realization.

Take advantage and come to enjoy the most spectacular cave in the Aragonese Pyrenees!
